If you could buy only one nonprofit marketing book, I recommend Robin Hood Marketing: Stealing Corporate Savvy to Sell Just Causes by Katya Andresen.
Robin Hood Marketing offers lots of proven marketing strategies & tactics for nonprofits. Although most of the examples relate to social marketing organizations, I believe most nonprofits (and even for-profits) can benefit from this book. Sharing real-life examples from the corporate and nonprofit worlds, readers gain insight and practical advice on:
- How to appeal to your target market’s values
- Understanding the scope and impact of marketplace and competitive forces
- How to develop and deliver a compelling message.
Meet the Author
You can meet Katya Andresen & other marketing professionals (including me) at this year’s AMA Nonprofit Marketing Conference, July 9-11, 2007, in Washington, DC. I'll be there to present a pre-conference tutorial, Building Your Organization's Share of Mind & Heart: Fundamentals of Nonprofit Marketing.
It will be a great conference, and I hope to see you there.
Wendy, it's no different here - marketing and PR are sometimes considered interchangeable, although they are vastly different. I heard a great example of this when a nonprofit staff member told me her organization's Board members wanted to volunteer for the organization's Marketing Committee because that was "the fun committee."

Hi and thanks for this. I am an Australian lecturer in fundraising and nonprofit marketing and wondered if you find that public relations and marketing get rolled together a lot in your country. They seem really separate in the corporate world but the terms are almost interchangeable when talking about the nonprofit side. Thanks for writing your book and its catchy title.

Thanks for the kind words. Can't wait to meet you, too! I'm happy to give away a copy of the book for one of your blog readers - just send me the contact info. All best,
Katya
